Heist! Art, Film, and Food Across Montclair

Some crimes are too fascinating to ignore. On Sunday, April 26, the Montclair Art Museum (MAM), Montclair Film, and Turtle + the Wolf are making a day of it. One ticket covers it all.

At 1 p.m., Erin L. Thompson, professor of art crime at John Jay College (CUNY), author, and the only person in America with that title, presents Heist! How to Steal a Masterpiece (And Why You Probably Shouldn’t Try). How do thieves actually pull off museum heists? What happens to a stolen Picasso once it’s off the wall? Thompson, whose work has appeared in the New York Times, on NPR, and on the Freakonomics podcast, takes audiences into the surprising, strange, and often absurd world of art theft, from the 1911 disappearance of the Mona Lisa to a Rembrandt stolen four times from the same museum. Expect spectacular security failures, criminal psychology, and an answer to the laser question.

Montclair Film’s The Bellevue Theatre

Then at 3:30 p.m. at The Bellevue Theatre, Montclair Film presents STOLEN (2005), a documentary about the crime that has haunted the art world for over 30 years. In March 1990, two thieves posing as police officers walked into the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston and left with $500 million worth of art — including a Vermeer, a Rembrandt, and a Degas. The case has never been solved. The art has never been found. The screening is followed by a Q&A with director Rebecca Dreyfus. Doors open at 3 p.m.
